Broken Hill and Bankstown Council’s signed its first Sister City Agreement in September 1986.

This relationship focuses predominantly on sport and gives the young people of Bankstown the opportunity to experience life in the Outback and gives our kids the opportunity to experience city and urban life.

Since the formation of the formal relationship 21 years ago, thousands of young people have participated in the popular annual 'Youth Sporting Exchange'. During this Exchange each city alternates hosting up to 200 young people for friendly sporting matches, during which time they are billeted out to local families. Many young people participate in this Exchange for several years running and the initiative has helped lay the foundation for many life long family friendships between community members in each city.

This is a highly successful exchange and has been considered one of the most successful Sister City relationships in Australia.
